An Amazing Stat From The Steel Curtain Defense

The Pittsburgh Steelers defense of the mid-to-late 1970’s was known as the Steel Curtain Defense, and for good reason. Opposing offenses were confused and usually overwhelmed by the Steeler defense which included such notable players as Jack Lambert, Jack Ham, Donnie Shell, Mean Joe Greene, L.C. Greenwood, Steve Furness, and more.

One amazing stat (it truly is hard to find just one) from this group involves the latter half of the 1976 season. Over the course of the final nine games of the 1976 NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers defense allowed 28 points… total. That means that their opponents averaged scoring only 3.1 points per game during that stretch.
