George Seifert’s Winning Seasons With The 49ers

by @ . Filed under Coach Facts

Often overlooked as a head coach, George Seifert put up some very good numbers in what was a relatively short time as an NFL head coach when compared to many others. The biggest criticism of Seifert is that most of his accomplishments came with a team the was built by his predecessor and NFL legend Bill Walsh. While this may be somewhat true, there are many instances in the history of professional sports where a succeeding coach does not build on the successes of his immediate predecessor.

Here are a few facts regarding George Seifert:

-Despite Bill Walsh’s presence in the Hall of Fame, and his status as one of the best coaches the NFL has ever seen, it is George Seifert who holds the 49ers team record for most wins by a head coach. He accumulated 98 wins in only eight seasons while Walsh put up 92 wins in ten seasons.

-During all eight seasons that George Seifert was the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, the team never won fewer than ten games.

-It was during Seifert’s time as 49ers head coach that the organization had to navigate the difficult process of transitioning from one superstar quarterback (Joe Montana) to another (Steve Young).

-Through the eight seasons that Seifert was the head coach of the 49ers, the team ranked first in the league in scoring five different times, including a string of four straight years (1992-95).

George Seifert was much more than just the guy that kept doing what Bill Walsh had started. For eight seasons in San Francisco he was the head coach of one of the best teams the league has ever seen. He kept them at this high level through difficult times and deserves much more respect than he gets.

Looking At The 2008 Miami Dolphins

by @ . Filed under Team Analysis

So, recently the Dolphins have been struggling at the quarterback position. After Trent Green’s perfectly terrible performance last season, the Dolphins are again searching for a new quarterback. They are now faced with the a decision to make, John Beck or Josh McCown?

McCown seems to be the better choice based on the fact that he has more experience and athletic ability then John Beck. McCown has been in the league for six years and currently has thirty-one starts and thirty-five touchdown passes. On the opposite side, John Beck had only one touchdown pass in his rookie year. Beck went almost fourteen quarters without putting together a scoring drive and seemed to lose the ball when put under pressure. The best bet seems to be McCown at the moment.

Moving on to the Wide Receiver position. Will Ted Ginn ever become the number one receiver on the Dolphins? Ted Ginn was drafted ninth overall and brings to the table two very impressive weapons, speed and a set of sure hands. The 178 pound 5’11 Wide receiver, with some training and practice could turn out to be exactly what the doctor ordered. I mean, Steve Smith and Santana Moss, two of the smaller receivers in the league, both make huge impacts on the field.

After taking an Injury to his Achilles’ Tendon, Strong Safety Yeremiah Bell is looking o help improve the Dolphins twenty-two takeaways last season, third fewest in the NFL. Hopefully he can provide the spark needed to help the Dolphins become a top defense in the league.

Outside Linebacker Joey Porter really needs to step his game up in order to earn his pay. With the current loss of Jason Taylor, the Dolphins pass rush is going to be pretty weak. He earns 2 million a sack and made 5 ½ sacks last season.

Middle Linebacker Channing Crowder has shown his above-average performance on the field. Unfortunately his behavior off the field leaves something to be desired. He stated that he is going to get focused and leave his physical gifts to optimum use.

Will Allen has been placed on the left side while Andre Goodman and Michael Lehan duke it out to earn the starting spot on the right. Should turn out to be a great battle, both bring different things to the table. In his 2006 season Lehan proved to be the Dolphins best corner, time will tell if he is still capable of filling that role.

But, How Good Was Joe Namath?

by @ . Filed under Player Facts, Players In The News

But, How Good Was Joe Namath?

Ever since the New York Jets traded for Brett Favre, much has been said that this gives the Jets their best quarterback since Joe Namath. Joe Namath is a borderline mythical figure in football history. His prediction of a Super Bowl win and then following through with it went a long way in establishing the legitimacy of the old AFL teams. But, how good was Joe Namath?

Joe Namath is a five time Pro Bowler and a member of the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame. 1968 was Namath’s best year, in that year he was the Super Bowl MVP, the player of the year, and also was a 1st-team All-Pro selection. He would go on to win the 1969 player of the year award and the 1974 comeback player of the year.

But, Joe Namath wasn’t the picture of success that history now seems to paint him to be. The Jets record in games started by Joe Namath was exactly .500, sitting at 61-61-0. In his 13 seasons in professional football, Namath only had four seasons in which he led his team to a better than .500 record (1967, 1968, 1969, 1972).

Some other facts about Joe Namath:

-He led the league in interceptions on four different occasions, and was only the league leader in touchdown receptions one time.

-Though he did throw 173 touchdowns in his career, he also threw 220 interceptions.

-In only two of his 13 professional football seasons did he throw more touchdowns than interceptions.

It is quite possible that Brett Favre is not the best quarterback the Jets have had since Joe Namath, but simply the best quarterback that the Jets have ever had.

The Packers: Before And After The Brett Favre Trade

by @ . Filed under Player Facts, Team Facts

The sporting world is drowning in news and talk about Brett Favre coming back out of retirement and either playing for the Green Bay Packers or forcing them to trade him to another team. What does Brett owe the Packers? What do the Packers owe Brett? What do both parties owe the fans or backup quarterback Aaron Rodgers who was promised the starting quarterback role after Favre initially retired?

Let’s leave that all behind though, and look at one fact regarding Brett Favre’s impact on the Green Bay Packers:

From the time that Packers’ legendary quarterback Bart Starr retired in 1972, until Brett Favre joined the team in 1992, the Packers managed to only win approximately 40% of their games and no titles. In the years that Brett Favre has been the starting quarterback for the Green Bay Packers they have won approximately 63% of their games. They have also won division and conference titles, as well as a Super Bowl title.
