Football Cards… Remember When?

by @ . Filed under Recommended Sites

Ahh, football cards.

Many of us older football fans collected them when we were kids. Heck, if you were around in the late 1980s to the late 1990s, chances are you were buying football cards even if you weren’t a kid. Here is a great blog that covers the glory days of football card buying. By glory days, I’m not talking about the 1950s, 1960s, or 1970s. I’m not even talking about the #’d inserts, game used jersey cards, and autograph cards of 2000 and later. I’m speaking of the massively produced cards of the late 1980s to mid 1990s.

David Klingler, Mark Rypien, and Andre Rison all highlight the front page of footballcards.wordpress.com right now, it sure brings back some memories. Check ‘em out today!

Corey Dillon’s Greatest Game: 278 Yards Rushing

by @ . Filed under Great Games

On October 22nd, 2000 Cincinnati Bengals running back Corey Dillon had one of the greatest games ever when he racked up 278 rushing yards in a victory over the Denver Broncos. This set the record for most rushing yards in a game until three years later when Baltimore’s Jamal Lewis would run for an amazing 295 yards. Here are some interesting facts related to Corey Dillon’s incredible game.

-This was the Bengals first win of the season, raising their record to 1-6.

-Thanks to a 77 yard touchdown run by wide receiver Peter Warrick on an end-around play, the Bengals would rush for a combined 407 yards during the game.

-It was a good thing the run game was on as the Bengals quarterbacks didn’t fare too well: Starter Akili Smith completed two passes out of nine attempts for 34 yards and no touchdowns during the game, backup quarterback Scott Mitchell came in and completed no passes on five attempts for of course no yards and no touchdowns. Yes, the Bengals put up a total of 34 yards passing during the game to go along with their 407 yards rushing.

-Corey Dillon had a 100 yard game based on his two touchdown runs alone, the first being 65 yards and the second being 41 yards.

-Three different Cincinnati Bengals players scored rushing touchdowns on that day, Corey Dillon, Peter Warrick, and Brandon Bennett.

-Corey Dillon’s greatest game overshadowed a very good game by Broncos quarterback Brian Griese who completed 30 of 45 passes for 365 yards and two touchdowns that day.

-The Bengals were also sacked twice for a loss of 20 yards total, this means their net yards on passing plays was actually just 14.

-At halftime, the Bengals were losing to the Broncos by a score of 14-10.

Little Known Information About Former Great Randall Cunningham

by @ . Filed under Little Known Facts, Player Facts

Here are some interesting facts about former NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham:

-He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round of the 1985 NFL Draft. Cunningham was one of the most physically gifted athletes to ever play the position of quarterback. A number of the best highlights from the late 1980s and early 1990s include Randall Cunningham scrambling around and either finding a way to make an incredible pass or finding a way to tuck the ball in and run for a touchdown. Cunningham never got his Super Bowl ring, but he was successful, even after leaving the Eagles, when he helped the Minnesota Vikings become one of the more exciting teams to watch for a few years.

-His most impressive year in terms of touchdowns thrown was 1998 after he’d joined the Vikings when he threw 34 TDs.

-Cunningham played quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, and Baltimore Ravens. The only team he had a losing record for as a starting quarterback was Dallas where he went 1-2.

-Randall Cunningham led the league in yards per rushing attempt in both the 1989 and 1990 NFL seasons. In 1989 he averaged 6.0 yards per rushing attempt, and in 1990 he averaged a whopping 8.0 yards per attempt.

-In 1990, Randall Cunningham came just 58 yards short of attaining a 1,000 yard rushing season as a quarterback.

-In 1989 and 1990, Cunningham’s longest runs of the season were both over 50 yards.

-Randall Cunningham caught two passes during his career. Coincidentally, both went for three yard losses.

-He won the Bert Bell Award for Player of the Year on two different occasions, but ten years apart. The first time came in 1988 with the Eagles and then he won it again with the Vikings in 1998.

-Cunningham also played punter while in college and ocasionally with the Eagles they would run a play on fourth down from the shotgun formation and he would end up punting the ball. He ended up leading the league in the category of longest punt of the season on two different occasions. In 1994 he punted the ball only one time, but it did end up being an 80 yard punt. Five years earlier, in 1989, he had punted the ball six times over the course of the season, but one of them went for 91 yards.

-In five different seasons, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, and 1992, Randall Cunningham led the league in both number of times sacked and yards lost due to being sacked.

Howie Long In The Movies

by @ . Filed under In The Movies, Player Facts

Many people know Howie Long as the longtime defensive end for the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders. During his 13 year career he was an eight time Pro Bowler and was made a member of the 1980s All-Decade Team. He also owns a Super Bowl ring thanks to the Raiders’ 1984 victory over the Washington Redskins. Many younger football fans know Howie Long from his work as a member of the Fox Network’s studio show where he does analysis alongside the likes of Terry Bradshaw and Jimmy Johnson. One of the things many people don’t know him for though is his film career. He had a number of credits during the 1990s and early 2000s, including:

Through The Years: The Quarterbacks of the Miami Dolphins

by @ . Filed under In-Depth Studies, Through The Years

There are other National Football League teams that may have a longer history in pro football than the Miami Dolphins, but the Dolphins have definitely had some of the better quarterbacks in the league when compared to many of their competitors. The Dolphins are still the only team ever to go undefeated through the regular season, the playoffs, and win the Super Bowl. They have a proud history, and they owe much of it to the great quarterbacks that have played for the team.

The 1960s
Dick Wood threw for the most yards as a quarterback for the expansion Miami Dolphins in 1966, but the player who started the most games at quarterback was George Wilson, his father George Wilson Sr. was the head coach of the team at the time. 1966 would be the younger Wilson’s only season of professional football. Other quarterbacks to see time that first year were Rick Norton and John Stofa. The quarterback position would look better almost immediately when the very next year the team drafted future Hall of Famer Bob Griese out of Purdue University. Griese would remain the starter for many years to come, including the rest of the 1960s.

The 1970s
With a quarterback the quality of Bob Griese at the helm, it wouldn’t be long before the Dolphins would turn their team around. 1970 would mark the first year after the AFL-NFL merger and the Dolphins ran off a record of 10-4 proving they were a team that couldn’t be taken lightly. In 1972, after a key injury to Griese, veteran (38 years old!) backup quarterback Earl Morrall would step in and help lead the team to a perfect regular season record and a Super Bowl victory. 1973 would see the Dolphins repeat as Super Bowl Champions, this time with Griese starting all but one game. 1973 would also see the Dolphins draft quarterback Don Strock who would remain with the team for 14 years. The Dolphins would finally see their streak of six consecutive seasons with double digit victories come to an end in 1976 when they would post a record of 6-8. The team would then post three consecutive 10+ win seasons to end the decade. 1979 would be the final season with Bob Griese as the primary starting quarterback.

The 1980s
The new decade would see the Dolphins with a new starting quarterback as David Woodley would take over the team and lead them to a 6-5 record his first year with the team, an 11-3-1 record in 1981, and a 7-2 record in the strike-shortened 1982 season. Dolphins legend Bob Griese stayed with the team in 1980 as David Woodley’s backup, but would retire following the season. A new rookie quarterback would show up in Miami in 1983 and it would spell the end of David Woodley’s time with the team. Dan Marino would start nine games during his rookie season and the team would go 7-2 in those games. Following that season, Woodley would move on to play two more years in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers before calling it a career. Marino however would lead the Dolphins back to the Super Bowl following the 1984 season, only to lose it to the San Francisco 49ers. The remaining years of the decade would see Marino not only be solid in his position as the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, but see him join the elite quarterbacks of his day. 1987 would be the last year that longtime backup quarterback Don Strock would be with the team.

The 1990s
The 1990s would begin the way the 1980s ended with Dan Marino as the starting quarterback, being backed up by Scott Secules. In 1992 Scott Mitchell would join the team as the backup and due to an injury to Marino the following season, he would be thrust into the role of starter. Mitchell would make the most of his seven starts at quarterback and leave the following season to become the highly paid starting quarterback of the Detroit Lions. Steve DeBerg would also start games during the 1993 season. Marino would return to the starting quarterback position in 1994. Longtime Cleveland Browns star Bernie Kosar would backup Dan Marino in 1994 and 1995, with Craig Erickson joining him in 1996. Erickson would be Marino’s backup in 1997, followed by Damon Huard to end the decade as the backup in 1998 and 1999. Dan Marino would retire following the 1999 season having put up a career regular season record of 147-93 as the Dolphins starting quarterback. During his career he led the league in completions six times, attempts five times, yards five times, and touchdowns three times.

The 2000s
The new millennium would start out with a whole new look for the Dolphins with Jay Fiedler as the starting quarterback. He would remain in that position for three seasons before splitting time with Brian Griese in 2003 and A.J. Feeley in 2004. During Fiedler’s stretch as the starter some of the people that served as backups included Damon Huard, Ray Lucas, and Sage Rosenfels. Gus Frerotte would be the starting quarterback for the Dolphins in 2005. During the 2006 and 2007 seasons the team saw games started by five different quarterbacks, they are Joey Harrington, Daunte Culpepper, Cleo Lemon, Trent Green, and John Beck. The team would turn the job over to Chad Pennington for the 2008 season.

For a team that had basically three starting quarterbacks (Griese, Woodley and Marino) from 1967 through 1999 to go to having ten different starting quarterbacks in less than a decade, is quite a change. It is obvious to see that the Miami Dolphins experienced their most success when they had stability at the position of starting quarterback. With the change to Pennington for 2008, maybe the Dolphins are embarking on a new era of stability that will bring them back to the top of the league.

An Amazing Four Year Streak For A Hall-of-Fame Quarterback

by @ . Filed under Player Facts, Team Facts

George Blanda is a hall of famer, a former NFL quarterback and kicker, and a pro football legend. He played more seasons in the NFL than any other player in history, and during his 26 years of play he excelled at multiple positions. But, here is a streak that most people think no hall of fame quarterback would ever come close to setting.

While quarterbacking the Houston Oilers in the AFL, he managed to lead the league in interceptions thrown in four consecutive seasons. Though no quarterback since has come close to the 42 interceptions Blanda threw to lead the league in 1962, Blanda would follow that up by throwing 25 in 1963, 27 in 1964, and 30 in 1965.

In three of those years leading the league in interceptions thrown, Blanda would also lead the league in passing attempts and pass completions.

As negative as interceptions are in a quarterback’s performance, it is hard to imagine a pro quarterback leading their league in interceptions thrown in four consecutive years and ending up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Want Something Original? Get Holiday Eyeglass Frames!

by @ . Filed under Recommendations

One of the things that is definitely true about the marketplace for almost any product is that these days, there are holiday versions of almost anything. Holiday pot holders, holiday welcome mats, holiday decorations, holiday clothing… just about everything that people use, there is a holiday version of it available.

The same is true for eyeglasses.

What a great way to accent something with a holiday flavor though. For those who need eyeglasses, having a pair that was green or red, may be a great way to get into the holiday spirit. There are even eyeglass frames that come with a holiday pattern, like snowflakes, on the rims or arms. Holiday frames are a unique way that someone can express themselves. They are also a great conversation starter, as they are something people don’t always see but are naturally attracted to.

Holiday themed accessories are a nice way to that someone can become a little more engaging to both co-workers and clients, as well as friends and family. Plus, they are a great way to stand out from the crowd. Aunt Millie is sure to have a snowman sweater this year. Uncle Joe will of course wear his red vest all the time. But, how many people have holiday themed eyeglasses? Check out ZenniOptical.com for these and other great eyeglass frames!

The Most NFL Touchdowns Scored By A Player Who Played College Football At A Military Academy

by @ . Filed under College Football, The Record Book

While they are no longer the powerhouses they were in the early days of college football, there is still a rich tradition when it comes to the football programs of Army and Navy. The Air Force Academy came about a little later but also has played some important games in college football. But what graduates of the military academies have scored the most NFL touchdowns?

The most touchdowns scored in NFL history by a player who came into the NFL from one of the United State military academies is 39 by Bob Hoernschemeyer.

Bob Hoernschemeyer played college football for the Indiana Hoosiers before finishing his college career at the U.S. Naval Academy. After college, Hoernschemeyer joined the All American Football Conference, an early competitor to the NFL. He began his pro career in 1946 playing for the Chicago Rockets, then the Brooklyn Dodgers, and finally the Chicago Hornets before joining the Detroit Lions of the NFL where he would spend the last six years of his football career. An interesting note about Hoernschemeyer’s time with the Lions is that he would have the longest run from scrimmage by anyone in the NFL during both the 1950 (96 yards) and 1951 seasons.

What about the other military academies?

The most touchdowns scored in the NFL by a player who played for Army is 11 by Hampton Pool. All 11 of Pool’s touchdowns were scored during his four year career (1940-1943) with the Chicago Bears. Pool was out of football after that, though he came back three years later to play one season (1946) with the Miami Seahawks of the All American Football Conference.

The most touchdowns scored in the NFL by a player who played for Air Force is 4 by Larry Cole. The most interesting part about that is that Cole played on the defensive line of the Dallas Cowboys for 13 seasons. During that time he returned three interceptions and one fumble for touchdowns.

The Career Receiving Leader Of Players Who’ve Only Played In One Game

by @ . Filed under The Record Book

We’ve covered the career leaders for quarterback (Steve Bradley) and running back (Vincent Alexander) in terms of players whose NFL career consist of only one game played, so to add to the list we need to take a look at the receivers. Which receiver has the most receiving yards of any player who has only played one NFL game in their entire career?

That honor goes to Chicago Bears wide receiver Randy Burks who in his one game in the NFL caught one pass for 55 yards. That is more receiving yards than any other player who has played only one game in their career.

While Bradley and Alexander accomplished their marks as replacement players during the 1987 NFL player’s strike, Burks got his chance at the big time in 1976.

Are there any other bloggers out there?

Whether you’re a blogger or not, sometimes life would be easier if the whole typing process was not only simpler, but a lot faster. There are ways to speed up the typing process that don’t include endless typing tests and constant finger drills. One of the best ways is through voice recognition software. Imagine the productivity that you could have if you could just dictate your writing needs straight to your computer. If that sounds great to you, check out the information below.

There are even ways to get cutting edge software like this at a discount. Save 25% on Dragon Naturally Speaking with Coupon Code.

Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Basic with Discount Coupon Code

Hello my name is Brett Bumeter and I write about Dragon Naturally Speaking at Softduit.com (Tip if you are looking for the details on the coupon codes scroll to the bottom of this article). I wanted to share this video with you showing a fellow blogger named Drew who is using Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 for the first time. There are some interesting things that you will see in this video that I wanted to point out to help you get a sense of how Dragon NaturallySpeaking works and how it could potentially work for you.

I think it’s important to see Dragon NaturallySpeaking, when people are using it and videos definitely help show you how well the software works these days. It’s extremely fast and can help you to type at 150 words per minute. You can see this in the demonstration that Drew has created as he is basically talking at a relatively normal speed. You will notice that he tends to look with his eyes to the right and up just a little bit.

I mention this not because Drew is looking in some strange direction, but instead because Dragon NaturallySpeaking does use your brain in a slightly different way than what you may be used to. You have to think of the words you will say in your head and then speak it out loud. That’s a little different than when you think of a composition and type it out with your fingers or even more different than when you attempt to write with your hands using a pen and paper. All three activities use different sections of our brains.

There used to be a time a decade ago when using Dragon NaturallySpeaking was more difficult because it would take a significant amounts of time to train the software. These days, the software can be trained in as little as seven minutes. The out-of- the-box experience with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 is flat-out amazing. That said, it will take you a little bit of time to train your brain or compose messages or articles or e-mails by speaking them out loud.

You can type 150 words a minute using Dragon NaturallySpeaking and that’s typically 2 to 3 times faster than your average person can type. 2 to 3 times faster can save you a great deal of time and a great deal of money. This can enable you to spend more time with your family or be more productive at work and get more done and possibly a promotion or raise. Possibly the biggest benefit that you can experience is just staying on top of your workload with less effort.

If you consider also that Drew is looking off to the right a little bit as he’s composing, I will share with you a hidden benefit of Dragon NaturallySpeaking. When you use Dragon NaturallySpeaking, you are not locked into a position physically, where you have to stare at your computer monitor all of the time. When you don’t have the light on your computer screen glaring in your face all the time, you experience a great deal less eye strain. The muscles in your eyes can relax more, as you look around the room and change your focal point. You would be amazed at how much extra energy this will give you as your eyes, and the muscles in your eyes don’t get worn out as fast as they would if you sit at a computer and type all day long.

We often associate sore hands and fingers and wrists with typing, but typing also creates very sore eyes and can even lead to migraine headaches. Plus, it basically just makes you tired sitting in front of your computer. Using Dragon NaturallySpeaking, you can save a great deal of time and effort and keep your energy level high, because you’re not wearing out your eyes. With a wireless microphone headset like the one I’m using, you can even pace around your desk or exercise on a treadmill or bike machine while you write your emails!

Best regards,
Brett Bumeter

PS I wrote this article with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 preferred. It took me about five minutes to write the words above, which are proximally 670 in length. That’s about 130 words per minute typing, and it only took me another minute or two to edit, which is still approximately 95 words per minute with editing included!
