Football Movies: Any Given Sunday

When Sunday has come and gone and there is no more football, well except for Monday night and the occasional Thursday… oh, and Saturday now and then, one of the best ways to relax is by sitting down and enjoying a good movie. And what better type of movie to watch than a football movie?

Any Given Sunday came out in 1999 and had a huge cast of known names. It centers around the fictional Miami Sharks, a once great professional football team that has now fallen on hard times. It really does a very good job of looking at all aspects of a professional football team including the front office, players, and coaches.
The title and theme of the movie are from the old football cliche that on any given Sunday, anything can happen. As the movie goes on, this is shown to be true again and again.

Any Given Sunday was received well by fans of football and those who are not. There is good drama, nice sports action, and some pretty funny moments as well.

Starring in the movie are: Al Pacino, Cameron Diaz, Jamie Fox, LL Cool J, Dennis Quaid, James Wood, Matthew Modine, Aaron Eckhart, and John C. McGinley.

Football fans will enjoy seeing some of the legendary stars of the National Football League in the movie too. Lawrence Taylor plays the captain of the Miami Sharks defense and Jim Brown plays the team’s defensive coordinator. Other former players appear as coaches of the opposing teams, including Bob St. Clair, Y.A. Tittle, Dick Butkus, Warren Moon, and Johnny Unitas.

Archive footage shown during the film includes scenes of great NFL stars in action like: Barry Sanders, Ricky Watters, Terrell Owens, Dick Butkus, Y.A. Tittle, Emmitt Smith, Warren Moon, and Johnny Unitas.

Of note:

Jamie Foxx’s role was originally given to Sean “P. Diddy” Combs who had to back out due to a scheduling conflict.

One of the people given credit as a technical advisor was Jamie Williams, who once played tight end for the San Francisco 49ers. He and writer Richard Weiner had earlier written a script title ‘Monday Night’, and Any Given Sunday was partially based on that.
