At Boise State in 2013 and 2014, running back Jay Ajayi proved himself by gaining first 1,425 yards and then 1,823 yards, respectively. The Miami Dolphins then selected him 149th overall in the 5th round of the 2015 NFL Draft. As a rookie in 2015 he wasn’t used a great deal, seeing his heaviest workload in the second to last game of the season when he carried the ball nine times.
2016 looked to start the same way as the Dolphins started the year off with former Texans star Arian Foster as their main guy in the backfield. When the year ended though, Jay Ajayi not only had a great season, but three truly great games.
Game 1: Miami vs. Pittsburgh
The Dolphins hosted the Steelers on October 16, 2016 and wound up winning the game 30-15. In the process, Jay Ajayi carried the ball 25 times for 204 yards and two touchdowns. This was the fourth 200 yard rushing game in Dolphins history and, at the time, the third highest rushing performance in team history.
Game 2: Miami vs. Buffalo
The very next week, in the 7th game of the season, the Dolphins welcomed the Bills to town and summarily beat them 28-25. In that game, Jay Ajayi turned in his second 200 yard rushing performance. Back to back 200+ yard rushing games was something Miami had never seen before. He finished that game surpassing his total from the previous week when he carried the ball 29 times for 214 yards and a touchdown.
Game 3: Miami vs. Buffalo II
In the second to last game of the 2016 season, the Miami Dolphins traveled to Buffalo to face the team that Jay Ajayi had ran for 214 yards against a couple of months earlier. The Dolphins pulled off another three point win against the Bills that day, this time winning 34-31, and Jay Ajayi had another big, big day. This time he carried the ball 32 times for 206 yards and one touchdown.
Jay Ajayi joined rare company in 2016 when he pulled off three 200 yard games in one season. Only three players had ever done that before. O.J. Simpson had three 200 yard games in 1973, Earl Campbell had four 200 yard games in 1980, and Tiki Barber had three 200 yard games in 2005.
The Dolphins have long been known as a passing team but in 2016, Jay Ajayi made them look pretty good on the ground.
