Rice Owls Quarterbacks Who Have Been Selected In The NFL Draft

The Rice University Owls have been playing football for a very long time. Over the years they’ve had some great teams and produced some fine football players too, even at the highly sought after position of quarterback. What Rice Owls quarterbacks have been selected in the NFL Draft though?

Charley Eikenberg – 1945 – Yanks – 18th Round
Charley Eikenberg sat deep on the roster of the 1948 Cardinals but was able to start one game. He threw three TD passes that day. It was the only touchdown passes he would throw in pro football.

Tobin Rote – 1950 – Packers – 2nd Round
Tobin Rote was drafted by Green Bay in the second round of the 1950 NFL Draft. He played with the Packers for seven years, followed by a three year stint with the Lions. He then went north of the border for three seasons with the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. He came back in 1963 for two seasons with the Chargers and one final year of pro football with the Broncos.

King Hill – 1958 – Cardinals – 1st Round
Rice’s King Hill was the number one overall pick of the 1958 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons with the Cardinals before playing over seven with the Eagles. He finished his career with a partial season with the Vikings before going back to the Cardinals for a final season of pro football in 1969.

Frank Ryan – 1958 – Rams – 5th Round
Frank Ryan started his career out with four seasons with the Rams. He then moved on to play for the Cleveland Browns for seven seasons where he had the luxury for many years of handing the ball off to the great Jim Brown.

Tommy Kramer – 1977 – Vikings – 1st Round
After being selected with the 27th overall pick of the first round in the 1977 NFL Draft, Tommy Kramer spent 13 of his 14 NFL seasons with the Vikings. After one final year with the Saints, Tommy Kramer retired following the 1990 season.

Donald Hollas – 1991 – Bengals – 4th Round
From 1991 to 1994, Donald Hollas played for the Cincinnati Bengals. He then spent time in the training camps of a couple of teams, and even played in the Arena Football League, before spending the 1997 and 1998 seasons with the Oakland Raiders.

Of note:

-In 1958, the Rice Owls actually had two quarterbacks taken in the draft in the same year, King Hill and Frank Ryan.
