Western Illinois University, located in the community of Macomb, was founded in 1899. Its sports team compete under the name the Western Illinois Leathernecks. This is a small school, but one with a proud history for being tough competition at the NCAA Division I-AA level.
The school has actually had three players play quarterback there and then go on to be chosen in the NFL Draft.
Mike McFarland – 1961
In 1961, the Minnesota Vikings chose WIU quarterback Mike McFarland with the first pick in the 20th round of the NFL Draft.
Paul Singer – 1989
In 1989, the Atlanta Falcons picked Paul Singer with the 7th pick of the 8th round.
Gene Benhart – 1990
The very next year in 1990, Gene Benhart would be chosen by the Indianapolis Colts with the 7th pick of the 12th round.
None would go on to see acton in the NFL, but the honor of being selected in the NFL Draft while playing at such a small university is something they should all be very proud of.
