Billy Kilmer Was Quite The Athlete
Many people remember former 49er, Saint, and Redskin Billy Kilmer as a sort of journeyman NFL quarterback. He had a serviceable career but never really achieved greatness in the pros. There was however, a whole lot more to Billy Kilmer.
Some notes on Billy Kilmer:
He was an All-American basketball player in high school.
He played 3 seasons of quarterback for UCLA.
In 1960 he passed for over 1,000 yards, rushed for over 800 yards, and finished 5th in Heisman Trophy balloting, while also serving as the team’s punter.
Kilmer finished his UCLA career ranked in the top 5 all time for the school for passing yards, rushing yards, and total offense.
He was MVP of the 1961 College Football All-Star game.
During his rookie year with the 49ers he played mostly at running back and gained over 500 yards rushing and ran for 10 touchdowns.
Kilmer finished his pro career with over 1,500 completed passes, over 20,000 passing yards, over 150 touchdowns, over 1,500 rushing yards, 27 receptions, and 16 punts.
He sometimes was not much to look at, but he could get the job done in a number of different ways.
