He was a great pass rusher during both his time as a member of the San Diego Chargers as well as his years on the San Francisco 49ers. Many 49ers fans and football analysts credit the arrival of Fred Dean as one of the deciding factors in the 49ers becoming a Super Bowl caliber team in the early 1980s. -In a 27-0 victory by the San Francisco 49ers over the New Orleans Saints in 1983, Fred Dean was credited with six quarterback sacks.

-Fred Dean is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, College Football Hall of Fame, and Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.

-Fred Dean is one of the few star players to ever be traded in the middle of a season, having played part of 1981 with the Chargers before being moved to the 49ers.

-Fred Dean scored two touchdowns during his NFL career, both while with the San Diego Chargers. The first came on November 13th, 1977, an 11 yard fumble recovery against the Denver Broncos. This was followed two weeks later by a 22 yard interception return against the Seattle Seahawks.
