Ben Roethlisberger has put together a great career in a relatively short amount of time. He has won big games and made big plays. What was his first game ever like though?
The 0-1 Baltimore Ravens hosted the 1-0 Pittsburgh Steelers on September 19th, 2004 in a highly anticipated game. Tommy Maddox got the start that day, but would be out of the game after completing just 4 of 13 passes for 67 yards. Roethlisberger would take over for Maddox and finish the game 12 of 20 for 176 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Jamal Lewis scored on a 3 yard run in the first quarter and the Ravens would run up a 20-0 lead by the end of the third quarter on the strength of another Lewis touchdown run and two Matt Stover field goals. The Steelers finally got on the board with a three yard touchdown pass from Roethlisberger to Antwaan Randle El to start the fourth quarter. The Ravens would get another Stover field goal which would be answered by Roethlisberger with a 12 yard touchdown pass to Hines Ward. The last score of the game would come on a 51 yard interception return for a touchdown by the Ravens’ Chris McAlister. The final score of Ben Roethlisberger’s first game would be Ravens 30 Steelers 13.
