John Hadl starred at the University of Kansas, first as a halfback and then switched to quarterback during his junior year. In fact, he was an All American selection at running back following the 1960 season and then achieved the same honor in 1961 at the position of quarterback.
When he moved on to the pros, Hadl cast his lot with the upstart American Football League’s San Diego Chargers. He led the league in passing twice during the 1960’s and became one of the better quarterbacks in pro football. After retiring, he went into coaching and then college administration. He was also the first former American Football League player elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
