The Tampa Bay Buccaneers came into the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team along with the Seattle Seahawks. They have had an up and down existence that has included both a winless season and a Super Bowl victory.

Over the years, who has scored the most rushing touchdowns against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?

-As a member of the Los Angeles Rams and the Indianapolis Colts, Eric Dickerson scored ten rushing touchdowns against the Buccaneers.

-With 12 career rushing touchdowns against Tampa Bay, all time great Walter Payton sits in third place on the list.

-Two players are tied for first in the category of most career rushing touchdowns scored against the Buccaneers. Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions and Neal Anderson of the Chicago Bears each scored 14 career rushing touchdowns against Tampa Bay.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have faced lean times and times when they were at or near the top of the league. They have always prided themselves on having one of the tougher defenses in the league. No one can match the amount of rushing touchdowns that Barry Sanders and Neal Anderson scored against this great team.

The Bucs switched from the orange Creamsicle look they had had since they began play in the mid 1970s to a more intimidating color combination of red, black, and pewter. They also changed the team’s logo so that it was more in line with a pirate theme. The new logo consisted of a flag bearing a skull atop two crossed sabers in a skull and crossbones like appearance. The Oakland Raiders would file suit claiming that the new logo infringed on their trademark, and sought to not allow the Buccaneers to wear their new uniforms within the state of California. The suit was dismissed though as intellectual property lawsuits need to be filed on the federal level.

Simeon Rice, who racked up 122 sacks in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Denver Broncos, and Indianapolis Colts over a 12 year career has signed on to come out of retirement and play in the new United Football League that is starting this fall.

Here is a brief overview of the UFL and it’s teams.

Rice had some great years in the NFL, especially with the Buccaneers. He was the defensive rookie of the year in 1996 and a part of the 2002 Super Bowl Champion Buccaneers.

Rice will be 35 years old when he steps onto the field for the New York Sentinels this fall. How he does will have a lot to do with his conditioning after being away from pro football for more than a year, and the level of competition in the league.

An interesting fact about Simeon Rice:

-In his entire 12 years in the NFL, Simeon Rice only scored on one play. This was a safety that occurred in the 3rd quarter of the team’s 25-0 win over the Baltimore Ravens during week two of the 2002 season when the Bucs would go on to win the Super Bowl.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers don’t have the type of history that the older and more successful teams in the National Football League do, but they have put together a number of quality seasons. The Buccaneers came into the league for the 1976 season as an expansion franchise along with the Seattle Seahawks. Both teams were not very successful right from the start, but Tampa Bay was extremely unsuccessful going 0-14 during their first season in the league and 2-12 in 1977. Despite this poor start, not uncommon among expansion teams throughout history, the Buccaneers would turn it around and prove to have some successful seasons as well.

2002
The best season ever in Tampa Bay Buccaneers history was easily the 2002 NFL season. That season, behind new head coach Jon Gruden, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers put up their best regular season record ever (12-4), then went on to defeat the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs, before finally beating the Oakland Raiders in the Super Bowl. After twenty-seven years in the league, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers finally had their league championship.

1999
The 1999 season would see the Buccaneers put up an 11-5 record, at the time the best in team history, and they would advance all the way to the conference championship game before losing to the St. Louis Rams one game shy of a trip to the Super Bowl. This would be the best performance during the time that Tony Dungy coached the team. This would also be the last season with Trent Dilfer as the starting quarterback.

1979
The 10-6 record that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers put up in 1979 was not only the best in team history up to that point, but after records of 0-14, 2-12, and 5-11 in their first three seasons in the league, that 10-6 mark seemed unbelieveable. To the surprise of most football fans even more, the Buccaneers advanced past the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of the playoffs that season only to miss the Super Bowl by one game, losing to the Los Angeles Rams in the conference championship game by a score of 9-0.

2005
The 2005 season would see the Buccaneers go 11-5 in a year that most expected the team to finish at about .500. Regular season success was all that the team would know that year as they would lose in the wild card round of the playoffs to the Washington Redskins by the score of 17-10.

1997
Tony Dungy, in his second season as head coach of the team, would help the team go 10-6 in 1997. This was the Buccaneers first winning season since the strike-shortened year of 1981. This was also their first visit to the playoffs since that year too, a gap of fifteen years. They would make a good showing too, beating the Detroit Lions in the wild card round before losing to the Green Bay Packers in the divisional round.

For many years the Buccaneers were known largely for going their entire first season in the league without winning a game, they were also known for experiencing a lot of futility during different times in their history. There is much more to the team than that though. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not known as the winningest franchise in pro football history, and they are not known for winning a great amount of championships either. The team has won a Super Bowl though, which many organizations cannot say, and their accomplishment of coming one game away from making it to the Super Bowl in only their fourth year in the league is something both the team and the fans can be proud of. Most teams in the NFL, no matter what they are known for, have a decent amount of high points that they have reached as an organization during their history, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are no different.

Not really an answer, more like a correction. Krissy Knowitall recently sent a comment to us stating that we had a Tampa Bay Buccaneers fact wrong. We had originally included that two former Bucs starting quarterbacks had gone on to win Super Bowls with other teams (Doug Williams and Trent Dilfer), somehow we inadvertently left out Hall of Famer Steve Young. Thanks Krissy, the injustice has been corrected now in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers page!

While we’re at it, here are a couple of other interesting facts about Steve Young:

-Through 15 seasons in the NFL, Steve Young only started all 16 games of the season three times (1992, 1993, and 1994).

-In 1985 and 1986 as a part time starter with the Buccaneers, Steve Young had below .500 records of 1-4 and 2-12 respectively. In his thirteen seasons with the 49ers he only had one season with a below .500 record as the starting quarterback. This came in 1990 when he started one game for the team and they lost it.

-Even though Steve Young spent the first six seasons of his NFL career as a backup, he never went a full season in the NFL without having at least one rushing touchdown.

-In 1991, the longest touchdown pass thrown by any quarterback in the NFL was thrown by San Francisco’s Steve Young and covered 97 yards.

-Even though Steve Young played at the quarterback position, here are a few notable names that he ranks ahead of in the category of career rushing yards (through the 2007 season): Alan Ameche, “Fast” Willie Parker, Dalton Hilliard, Mike Anderson, Edgar Bennett, Leroy Hoard, Rocky Bleier, Bam Morris, Jim Kiick, Reggie Cobb, Paul Hornung, Fran Tarkenton, Frank Gifford, Reuben Droughns, Tony Nathan, Julius Jones, Rueben Mayes, and Lamont Jordan.

They’ve been to a couple NFC Championship games… they’ve even won a Super Bowl Championship… but, the Bucs today finally got something they hadn’t had in their entire history. After 32 years in the league, Tampa Bay has finally returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

It is a special play that doesn’t happen all the time, but it does happen enough that every other team in the league (even the teams that just recently came into the league) has done it. It happened today when second year player Micheal Spurlock (who is younger than the Bucs franchise) returned a kick by Atlanta Falcons kicker Morten Andersen 90 yards for a score.

This was the 1,865th kickoff return in Buccaneer history.

A total of 141 other players have attempted to do what young Micheal Spurlock did today for the Bucs.

The Bucs haven’t had near this issue with punt returns, in their entire history they’ve returned ten punts for touchdowns.

Way to go Bucs!

Kickoff Return Futility For Tampa Bay

Picture yourself a Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan, the excitement of the opening kickoff is approaching and you could care less. Why?

Here’s a statistical oddity, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from the time of their first game in 1976 through the 2006 season have never returned a kickoff for a Touchdown. They’d done it five times in preseason games during that time, but never during a regular season game. Imagine, if you were a Bucs season ticket holder since the early days you would’ve gone over thirty years and have never seen your favorite team return a kick for a Touchdown.

You would think just by chance there would be a couple missed tackles one day, a trick reverse on the return, or maybe even a lateral filled return that would bring the Buccaneers fans to their feet. Nope. Nothin’.

Wishing luck to the Tampa Bay special teams unit,
