Through the 2008 season he has led the league in rushing yards twice, rushing touchdowns three times, rushing yards per game once, total yards from scrimmage once, and combined rushing and receiving touchdowns once. He has also earned an MVP Award, a Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, and five trips to the Pro Bowl.

Over the course of his career he has also shown himself to be a fairly good passer too. He has completed eight passes in eleven attempts, seven of those completions going for touchdowns. What about that one pass completion that didn’t go for a touchdown though? That came in 2004 and was a 38 yard completion back to the quarterback, Drew Brees.

Philip Rivers didn’t automatically become a starting quarterback in the National Football League, he at first had to sit and watch Drew Brees have a couple of great seasons in San Diego. After Brees left though, Rivers got his chance to shine, and shine he did.

He has developed into one of the better and more exciting quarterbacks in the league. In no time at all all, he should be celebrating championships and individual awards just like Brees, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. He has already thrown a lot of touchdown passes for the Chargers, some of them in very big games.

Who has caught the most touchdown passes from him though? Through the 2009 season, here is a list of the top five receivers based on how many TD passes they’ve caught from Philip Rivers.

Antonio Gates – 32

Vincent Jackson – 25

Chris Chambers – 10

Darren Sproles – 9

Malcolm Floyd – 9

Drew Brees, though he is a long time away from retiring, has already had a very interesting NFL career. He came into the league out of Purdue University and had some relatively high expectations. Due to struggling early on and some injury problems, many people with the San Diego Chargers looked on him as somewhat of a disappointment.

In his final couple of years in San Diego, Brees really blossomed and started to show that this young quarterback might in fact be something special. Chargers fans and coaches wouldn’t be able to see that first hand though as he would eventually sign with the New Orleans Saints. It is there that Brees would find a home and show everyone exactly how good he was.

During his career so far, who have been Drew Brees’ favorite receivers? Here is a list of receivers through the 2009 season based on how many touchdown passes the quarterback has thrown their way.

Marques Colston – 33

Antonio Gates – 23

Lance Moore – 14

Devery Henderson – 13

Robert Meachem – 12

Just missing that top five list at this point is Reggie Bush with 11.

Charlie Joiner played wide receiver in the National Football League for 18 seasons, including stints with the Houston Oilers, Cincinnati Bengals, and San Diego Chargers. He was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 1996. He finished his career with 750 receptions for 12,146 yards. He played in some big games in the NFL, but what were his greatest games?

-The most receiving yards Charlie Joiner ever accumulated in one game is 200. He did this in 1975 while playing with the Bengals. It happened in a 35-23 loss to the Browns. He averaged more than 28 yards per catch that day because he picked up all 200 yards on only 7 catches, including a 51 yarder.

-The most touchdown receptions that Charlie Joiner ever had in one game is two, and he did it twice. The first time took place in 1970 when as a member of the Houston Oilers he contributed two touchdown receptions in the team’s 30-20 losing effort against the Bengals. His second two touchdown performance came in 1981 in a 34-27 loss to the Oakland Raiders.

Charlie Joiner put up some incredible career receiving numbers during his career, and played in some great games. Unfortunately for him, this very successful player had the best games of his career in games where his team suffered a loss.

The news spread quickly through the football community recently of the passing of legendary NFL head coach Don Coryell. People wouldn’t often think to use the term legendary for a coach who never won an NFL title, but it is the right word in this case.

Coryell came out of the college coaching ranks, where he had been the head man at San Diego State for more than a decade, to take over the St. Louis Cardinals in 1973. After five seasons there, he would find himself as the head coach of the San Diego Chargers in 1978. Coryell had success in St. Louis, but it was in San Diego where he would make a name for himself.

The Chargers’ “Air Coryell” offense as it was called led the league in passing yards an NFL record six straight years. There seemed to be no one who could stop it. He took advantage of the talents of great players like Dan Fouts, Fred Dean, John Jefferson, James Brooks, Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner, Louis Kelcher, Lionel “Little Train” James, and more to help make the Chargers a perrenial power.

He had a profound influence on a generation of coaches that would follow him and changed the way the passing game was used in the NFL. He also was instrumental in redefining how a tight end was used at the time.

Here is a look at some interesting facts surrounding the legendary, yes legendary, head coach Don Coryell.

-While the head coach of the San Diego State football team, three times he would lead them to an undefeated record: 1966, 1968, and 1969.

-Two of his assistant coaches while he was the head coach at San Diego State were John Madden and Joe Gibbs, both of whom would go on to be voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

-In 12 seasons of coaching at San Diego State, his record would end up being 104-19-2.

-Coryell was the first coach to ever win more than 100 games as both a college football coach and a professional football coach.

-Two players who played football for Coryell in college would go on to become Hollywood actors, Fred Dryer and Carl Weathers.

-Don Coryell was born in Seattle and played defensive back in college at the University of Washington.

-His best record as a professional coach came in 1979 when the Chargers went 12-4.

-Though he is more remembered for his days coaching the high powered “Air Coryell” offense of San Diego, he actually had a better winning percentage as the head coach of the Cardinals. His record in San Diego was 69-56 (.552 pct) while his record in St. Louis was 42-27-1 (.609 pct).

He was a great running back, but he also played his entire career with the Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs, meaning he was in the same division as the Chargers from 1982 to 1997.

Over the course of that time, Marcus Allen racked up 23 career rushing touchdowns against San Diego.

The second most rushing touchdowns against the Chargers is 8 and is held by four players: Pete Banaszak of the Raiders, Floyd Little of the Denver Broncos, and Curt Warner and Chris Warren of the Seattle Seahawks.

Many 49ers fans and football analysts credit the arrival of Fred Dean as one of the deciding factors in the 49ers becoming a Super Bowl caliber team in the early 1980s. Here are a few interesting facts about Fred Dean.

-In a 27-0 victory by the San Francisco 49ers over the New Orleans Saints in 1983, Fred Dean was credited with six quarterback sacks.

-Fred Dean is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, College Football Hall of Fame, and Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.

-Fred Dean scored two touchdowns during his NFL career, both while with the San Diego Chargers. The first came on November 13th, 1977, an 11 yard fumble recovery against the Denver Broncos. This was followed two weeks later by a 22 yard interception return against the Seattle Seahawks.

The head coach is a very peculiar position to be filled on an NFL franchise. It is often said that they, along with quarterbacks, receive too much credit for victories and too much blame for losses. The San Diego Chargers have had some great head coaches over the years including Sid Gillman, Don Coryell, Bobby Ross, and Marty Schottenheimer. There was a five year period around the beginning of the 1970s though that the head coaching position in San Diego was rather confusing.

Sid Gillman was the head coach in 1969, when he stepped down due to poor health midseason after going 4-5 and turned the team over to Charlie Waller who would finish the season with a 4-1 record. Waller would remain the head coach in 1970, putting up a record of 5-6-3 (yes, three ties in one season). Gillman was back to coach the team in 1971 and went and 4-6 before stepping down once again and turning the team over to Harland Svare who would finish the year at 2-2. Svare would remain as the head coach for the 1972 season and would go 4-9-1. Svare would then start the 1973 season with a 1-6-1 record before being replaced by Ron Waller, no relation to Charlie Waller from earlier in our story.

-As a starting quarterback, Jim Everett had above .500 records in each of his first four seasons in the league and then below .500 records in his remaining eight seasons in the league.

-At the time of his retirement, Jim Everett was ranked in the top 20 all time in the NFL in the career categories of touchdown passes and passing yards.

-In 1991, Jim Everett lead the NFL in fumbles with 12. Interestingly, he only had one fumble recovery that year.
