10 Atlanta Falcons Rookie Receivers Fun Facts

The Atlanta Falcons have had some exciting teams over the years and a lot of that is due to their passing game. Sometimes even the rookies can make an impact too. Here is a look at some fun facts related to Atlanta Falcons rookie receivers during the team’s history.

The Most Yards In A Season

The most yards a rookie receiver has ever accumulated in one season was the 959 yards put up in 2011 by Julio Jones. This topped the 862 that Shawn Collins had put up in 1989.

Most Receptions In A Season

Shawn Collins kept the total receptions as a rookie team record for the Falcons though as his 58 in 1989 was four more than Julio Jones had in 2011.

Highest Receiver Drafted

1980 saw the Atlanta Falcons use the seventh overall pick in the NFL Draft on tight end Junior Miller out of Nebraska. This was the highest the team had ever taken a receiver until 2011 when they used the sixth overall pick on Julio Jones out of Alabama.

The Most TD Receptions In A Season

Julio Jones caught 8 TD passes as a rookie in 2011. This came one short of tying the team rookie record that had been set in 1980 when tight end Junior Miller caught nine.

First TD Reception In Season Opener

The first Falcons rookie receiver to catch a TD pass in the opening game of the season was Jim Mitchell in 1969. It happened in the second quarter of a win over the 49ers when he caught a 13 yarder from quarterback Bob Berry.

The first Falcons rookie receiver to catch a touchdown pass of 80 yards or greater was Bert Emanuel. He and Jeff George hooked up on an 85 yard scoring play on Christmas Eve in 1994 in a loss to the 49ers.

Multiple 100 Yard Games

The first Falcons receiver to have multiple 100 yard games for the team during his first season in football was Ken Burrow in 1971 who had two. 1975 saw Alfred Jenkins double that and have four 100 yard games. In 2011, Julio Jones would top that with five 100 yard games as a rookie.

The First With Two In One Game

In 1966, the Falcons first year in the NFL, in a loss to the Steelers, Atlanta quarterback would team up with Preston Ridlehuber on two touchdown tosses, the first 53 yards in length and the second 19 yards. This made Ridlehuber the first rookie Falcons receiver to have caught more than one TD reception in a game. These would be Ridlehuber’s only two TD receptions in his NFL career.

Three For Roddy White

Roddy White caught three touchdown passes as a rookie in 2005. He caught one of 19 yards in length from Michael Vick, another from Vick of 54 yards in distance, and then a 14 yarder from Matt Schaub.
