Johnson Leads The Bengals In Rushing Again, And Again, And Again!


In the United States, one of the most popular last names is Johnson. This is also a popular last name for those playing running back for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Three players have led the Bengals in rushing during a season and had the last name Johnson. In 1972 and 1973, running back Essex Johnson out of Grambling State led the Bengals in rushing. For seven straight years, from 1977 through 1983, the leading rusher for the Bengals was Pete Johnson out of Ohio State University. More recently, from 2003 through 2006, the leading rusher on the team has been Rudi Johnson out of Auburn University.

Through the 2009 season, the Bengals have played 43 seasons of professional football. In thirteen of those seasons, approximately thirty percent, they have been led in rushing by a player with the last name of Johnson.

There have been other Johnsons who have carried the ball for the Bengals too. Wide receiver Chad Johnson has run the ball on a number of occasions as had former punter Lee Johnson. Other Johnsons to have carried the ball for the team include Bill Johnson and Jeremi Johnson.
