The year was 1979 and new San Francisco 49ers head coach Bill Walsh had just worked out a young quarterback and decided that he was definitely the guy they wanted to draft. This young quarterback showed the leadership skills and accuracy that Walsh was looking for in a quarterback of the future. The day of the draft came and surprisingly another team took that quarterback before the 49ers could get him… and the Niners had to “settle” on their second choice: Joe Montana.
The quarterback Bill Walsh had wanted originally? Phil Simms of the New York Giants.
