How a quarterback does usually has a large bearing on how the whole football team does. The Buffalo Bills have had some very good quarterbacks over the years, including some of them being among the league’s best. Let’s take a look at the best first game of the season for Bill quarterbacks throughout the team’s history.
1971 – Dennis Shaw
Dennis Shaw would set the initial standard for the Bills when it comes to great games to start off the year. In 1971, the then 24 year old Shaw would complete 18 of 30 passes for 353 yards. Unfortunately, the Bills would fall in that game to the Dallas Cowboys by the score of 49-37.
1985 – Vince Ferragamo
Vince Ferragamo would surpass Shaw’s numbers in 1985 when he would put up 377 yards in the first game of the year. Amazingly, though he threw for that many yards he would not throw any touchdown passes that day. His final numbers were 31 of 46 for 377 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions. The Bills lost that game to the San Diego Chargers by the score of 14-9.
1991 – Jim Kelly
Jim Kelly would top both of those first game of the year performances in 1991 when he completed 29 of 39 passes for 381 yards and two touchdowns. Kelly had a number of amazing performances for the Bills, but this was his best ever in the opening game of the year. The Bills would also win this time around, beating the Miami Dolphins 35-31.
A quarterback having a great performance can usually go a long way in helping their team succeed. It is also hard to sometimes have that great performance early in the season, much less in the first game of the year. Dennis Shaw, Vince Ferragamo, and Jim Kelly sit atop the list of Bills quarterbacks when examining the subject of best first game of the years in team history.
