The Atlanta Falcons didn’t start playing football until the late 1960’s, and although they had a rough go of it for their first few years, they eventually established themselves as a team that had to be worried about. Since that time, like every other team in the leaue, they have experienced up and down years. The fans there continue to have a warm place in their hearts for the football team called the Falcons.
Atlanta has often been described as a passing team during it’s existence, and they have had some very good strong armed quarterbacks put up some very good numbers. Here is a look at the five best passing seasons in Atlanta Falcons team history.
#1 – 1995 – Jeff George
Jeff George was in his athletic prime in 1995. The 28 year old strong armed quarterback put up the first and so far only 4,000 yard passing season ever for the Falcons when he completed 336 of 557 attempts for 4,143 yards and 24 touchdowns. The team went 9-7 that year.
#2 – 1981 – Steve Bartkowski
Steve Bartkowski is one of the most loved quarterbacks from Atlata’s past. He had some great years on some teams that were not relaly full of talent. In 1981, he completed 297 of 533 passes for 3,829 yards and 30 touchdowns. Atlanta put up a record of 7-9 that season.
#3 – 1980 – Steve Bartkowski
1980 would see Steve Bartkowski really come into his own. He completed 257 of 463 passes for 3,544 yards and 31 touchdowns. That 31 touchdowns set the team record for touchdown passes in a season and was still the most ever on the team through the 2009 season. The team also went 12-4 that year, which is still the most wins by a Falcons quarterback in one year ever.
#4 – 1994 – Jeff George
In 1994, the Falcons would only go 7-9, but their quarterback Jeff George would have a very successful season. That year would see him complete 322 of 524 passes for a total of 3,734 yards and 23 touchdowns.
#5 – 2008 – Matt Ryan
Matt Ryan came to the Atlanta Falcons as a highly touted rookie, and he lived up to the hype in his first year in the NFL. He would complete 265 of 434 passes for 3,440 yards and 16 touchdowns. The touchdown total wasn’t overly impressive, but the passing yards was the sixth most ever by a Falcons quarterback. More importantly, Ryan would go 11-5 as the starter that season, putting up the second most wins ever in a season by an Atlanta quarterback.
