The Most 50+ Yard Touchdown Passes In One Game?

One of the most exciting plays in football is a long touchdown pass. There have been a number of great long touchdown passes in history, some are thrown short and the receiver does all the work, while others are long arcing bombs that are truly amazing to see. What’s the record for most touchdown passes covering 50 or more yards in one game?

The record is four 50+ yard touchdown passes in one game and it is shared by three different quarterbacks.

Sonny Jurgensen of the Philadelphia Eagles was the first to thrown four touchdown passes of 50 yards or more in one game. He did so in 1962 in a 45-35 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

1st Qtr: 56 yards to Tommy McDonald
2nd Qtr: 60 yards to Tommy McDonald
2nd Qtr: 60 yards to Timmy Brown
3rd Qtr: 82 yards to Timmy Brown

Jurgensen finished with 15 completions for 419 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions.
McDonald finished with 4 catches for 162 yards and 3 TDs
Brown finished with 5 catches for 199 yards and 2 TDs, in addition to 50 yards on 10 rushing attempts.

The second player to throw four 50+ yard touchdown passes in one game was the great Joe Namath of the New York Jets. He did it in 1972 in a 44-34 win over the Baltimore Colts.

1st Qtr: 65 yards to Eddie Bell
2nd Qtr: 67 yards to John Riggins
4th Qtr: 79 yards to Rich Caster
4th Qtr: 80 yards to Rich Caster

Namath finished with 15 completions for 496 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception.
Rich Caster finished with 6 catches for 204 yards and 3 TDs.

Randall Cunningham was the third quarterback to complete four touchdown passes of 50 yards or more in one game. He did this while he was a member of the Minnesota Vikings in 1998 in a 46-36 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

1st Qtr: 51 yards to Randy Moss
1st Qtr: 54 yards to Cris Carter
1st Qtr: 56 yards to Randy Moss
3rd Qtr: 56 yards to Randy Moss

Cunningham finished the game with 17 completions for 359 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception.
Moss finished with 3 catches for 163 yards and 3 TDs.

Of note during this game is that it was Randy Moss’ rookie year and though he had just three catches during the game, each of them was a 50+ yard touchdown pass. Three of Cunningham’s four 50 yard touchdown passes came in the first quarter too, which is also the record for most touchdown passes of 50 yards or more in one quarter.
