Facts and information about the San Antonio Gunslingers

  • The San Antonio Gunslingers entered the USFL in 1984 as an expansion team.
  • The Gunslingers Quarterback was Rick Neuheisel, former UCLA standout and future football coach of the University of Colorado and the University of Washington.
  • The Gunslingers had a reputation for being a cheaply run franchise. During their first year, the teams official headquarters were located in a double wide mobile home in the Alamo Stadium parking lot.
  • During the 1985 season, many of the paychecks to both players and coaches started to bounce. Some players were forced to trade game tickets to fans in exchange for food and in some cases a place to sleep.
  • Interestingly, because of how poorly the team was run by owner and Oilman Howard Manges, the San Antonio Gunslingers franchise did not fold like the rest of the teams… the franchise was revoked by the league following the 1985 season.
