Facts and information about the Birmingham Americans / Vulcans

• The Birmingham Americans signed famed Oakland Raiders Quarterback Kenny Stabler to play for them.

• The Birmingham Americans won World Bowl I over the Florida Blazers by a score of 22-21.

• The Birmingham Americans not only won the first World Football League Championship, they also hosted it as well.

• For the WFL’s second season, the Birmingham Americans were back as the Birmingham Vulcans.

• When the league folded after week 12 of the 1975 season, the Birmingham Vulcans had the best record at 9-3. Because of this, they were named 1975 World Football League Champions.

• Birmingham, along with Memphis, attempted to join the NFL but was denied.

• Birmingham won the first World Bowl and had a record of 15-5 during their first season, however they didn’t win their division as rival Memphis finished with a 17-3 regular season record.

• Birmingham was one of three teams to finish above .500 in both WFL seasons (the others being Memphis and Southern California).

• After their first season in the WFL, Birmingham would sign a number of former NFL stars including L.C. Greenwood of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
